Canopy to Coast is operated by Hannah Van Pelt who has over 10 years experience in the municipal and private ecology field. After graduating from University of Virginia with a BA in Environmental Science they moved to Washington State to be at the forefront of progressive environmental practices. Having served as a City Arborist, Stormwater Technician, and Habitat Restoration Specialist, they bring a comprehensive approach to natural resources management at any scale, from residential landscapes to urban forests and coastal wetlands.

Tree Health and Risk Assessment
Tree risk assessment is a process used to evaluate the potential risks and hazards associated with trees in a particular environment. It involves assessing the health, structural stability, and location of trees to determine if they pose a risk to people, property, or the environment. Tree risk assessment typically considers factors such as:
1. Health of the tree: Evaluating the overall health of the tree, including signs of disease, decay, or pest infestations.
2. Structural integrity: Assessing the tree's physical structure, including the condition of branches, trunk, and roots, to identify any weaknesses or defects.
3. Location: Examining the proximity of the tree to structures, roads, utility lines, and other potential targets, as well as assessing the potential consequences of failure.
4. Environmental conditions: Considering factors like wind, slope, soil conditions, and recent weather events that may affect the tree's stability.
Based on the assessment, recommendations are made for tree care or maintenance/removal to mitigate potential risks and promote healthy, thriving trees and forests, while ensuring the safety of the people and property living with them.
Need help interpreting the tree code/ordinances for your area? We will help you navigate the regulations and application process, including any required supporting documentation (Arborist/TRAQ reports). If desired, we can also facilitate the acquisition of estimates and contracting the right tree work company for your needs.
Stormwater Monitoring
Stormwater monitoring involves the collection and analysis of data related to rainwater or melted snow as it flows over surfaces like streets, rooftops, and parking lots. The goal is to assess the quality and quantity of stormwater runoff, often to protect the environment and water resources. Monitoring helps identify pollutants and can inform stormwater management practices to mitigate the negative impacts of runoff on water bodies and ecosystems.
Consultation Services include:
1. Stormwater Permit Compliance such as the development, implementation, tracking and reporting of a jurisdiction’s Stormwater Management Program (SWMP) per the Western Washington Phase I & II Municipal Stormwater Permits.
2. Landslide prevention/mitigation plans and slope stability/erosion control assessments
3. Best Management Practices for your home or business, specific to the code requirements in your jurisdiction.
4. Wetland, watercourse, and beachfront monitoring and restoration/management plans.
Habitat Restoration
Habitat restoration is the process of returning a degraded or damaged natural environment to a healthier, more balanced state. It involves activities like removing invasive species, replanting native vegetation, and improving the overall ecological conditions to support the return of native wildlife and plant species. The goal is to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem functionality while mitigating the impacts of human activities on the environment.
Let us help restore your land to a more natural, sustainable and eco-friendly state, no matter the size! Whether a little garden plot or a community park, we can all be habitat stewards. At Canopy to Coast we are strong believers in right plant, right place. A healthy, diverse selection of native species appropriate for site conditions, can provide innumerable benefits for our pollinators, birds, and greater community.
We would love to help with your next project:
1. Invasive species/noxious weed control
2. Native planting plans for forests, parks and rain gardens
3. Erosion control and slope stability mitigation
4. Plant sourcing, ordering, acquisition and delivery
5. Wetland, watercourse, and beach restoration
